Contest Time

In honor of my 2 year blog anniversary this week, I thought I would throw a small contest.  Here are the goodies you can win.

Nothing high dollar, but maybe you can pull something good out of the pack.  I had a hard time trying to figure out the contest the last few days.  With the terrible news that Cardinals pitcher Alex Reyes will need Tommy John surgery, I thought I would showcase a couple of his cards for the contest.

2014 Bowman Red Wave Refractor #ed to 25

2014 Bowman Red Ice #ed to 25

The winner needs to pick the correct serial number for either one of the cards.  You may only guess once, but you can guess for both cards.  Please indicate the number for each card, for example the wave is 1, and the ice is 25.  Hope that is not too confusing.

A Lot of Cards from Cards on Cards

I have traded with Kerry from Cards on Cards a handful of times since I started blogging a couple of years ago.  I believe our first trade was a mutually agreed upon swap of extra Cardinals, but ever since it has been a random package showing up on his or my mailbox.  Last fall I sent him a couple of small packages made up of duplicate Cardinals from the last decade.  He hit me back in a big way a few weeks ago.  As with other large trade packages, I will break the recap up into a few posts.  Today I will highlight the cards from the 1970s and 80s.

I already had a few 1976 SSPC cards, but these were all new to me.  Mike Tyson was living large in the 70s with the mullet and fu man chu mustache.

These are my first 1976 Isaly's discs.  Maybe a distant relative of Panini with the lack of logos, but at least you get the full team name.

Stickers make me feel like a kid again.  I remember taking Fleer logo stickers from the mid 1980s and sticking them on 800 count boxes.  I never had any cool player stickers like these 1983 Fleer Star Stickers.

Kerry either made frequent trips to Canada from his Oregon home in 1980s to buy baseball cards, or he has a great Canadian trading partner.  He sent a huge a mount of O-PEE-CHEE cards from various years.  Tom Nieto was one of my favorite players as a kid because he shares my birthday.  I graduated from the phase into collecting Cardinals with the same name.

1986 Topps/O-PEE-CHEE cards remind me of wanted posters.

1987 wood grain looks just as good on O-PEE-CHEE as it does on regular Topps.  I forgot LaPoint had a second stint with the Cardinals until I saw this card.  It was a rather short one though with only 6 appearances.

I am not for sure why some of these 1988 O-PEE-CHEE cards have white text and others are black.  Anyone have any ideas?

I love the Fleer sets that you could buy at the local drugstore that contained 40-50 cards.  Hard to believe Fleer chose Danny Cox as the lone Cardinal in the 1987 Exciting Stars set.  Forget about Coleman, Smith, and McGee.  The Morris and Magrane cards finished my 1987 Fleer Update team set.  Morris is better know for his Willie McGee impersonation than his playing ability.

I guess Ames and Revco were not good enough for Fleer, so Topps picked up their box sets.  That was rather Swell of them.

Score, Sportflics, and Classics were all staples of the late 1980s.  These are from 1989.  I had to google Hills to find out it was a department store chain.  Can't have the drug stores cornering the market on small box sets.

Super Bowl Sunday Wins

It has been one week since the Patriots won the Super Bowl.  I did not really care who won the game, but was somewhat rooting for the Falcons.  I like how Matt Ryan plays and handles himself.  I cannot recall hearing a bad thing about him.  But alas, Tom Brady pulled out some magic and won another title.  Like many Americans, I had some money on the game.  I had $10 in our super bowl grid at work.  The missed extra point in the 3rd quarter cost me $25.  Damn kickers

I was surfing EBAY while watching the game hoping to find some good deals that I could spend some potential winnings on.  I found a couple of Cardinals autos for $10 that helped soften the blow of the mixed extra point.

Hudson was the 34th overall pick in the 2016 draft.  He was the pick the Cardinals received when Jason Heyward signed with the Cubs.  He appears to be on the so-called "Wacha Plan"  where the Cardinals promote a recent draftee very quickly.  He appeared in a handful of Double A games at the end of the season.  He should see time in Triple A this year with an outside shot at St. Louis if there are many injuries in the bullpen.

Jones was a second round draft pick in 2016.  He appeared in rookie ball at the end of last season.  I would guess he has a good chance of opening the season in Class A Peoria.

I am 2 Today

I could not come up with any catchy title for my 2 year blogoversary (not for sure if that is a real word but I am going with it).  It has been fun writing about my Cardinals collection, but it has been even more enjoyable reading all the other collecting blogs.  There is a vast amount of knowledge out there that cannot be obtained from reading card sites.  It is the collector's that make the hobby so enjoyable.  As a thank you, I will post a contest later this week once I have the prize in hand.  Nothing Earth shattering, but maybe someone will like it.  As a wrap up, here is the most famous Cardinal to ever wear the number 2, HOFer Red Schoendienst.

2 in Two Weeks

I have been a member of Trading Card Database for two weeks now.  I am slowly added my Cardinals collection to the site.  I have a wantlist and havelist for all the base cards, and am slowly adding all the inserts, autos, and game used.  A nice feature of the site is the ability to match your wantlist with another collector's  trade list.  I was able to complete my second trade on the site after another trade sent a nice stack of Cardinals my way in return for a few Indians cards.

I love the minor league cards.  Back in the late 1980s the Cardinals Double A team was located in Springfield, IL.  It has been located in Springfield, MO since 2005.

I believe the 1989 Score Young Superstar cards were inserted in rack packs much the same as Topps All Star Glossy cards.

It is always nice to receive Conlon cards.  Although they are cheap, they are not the easiest to find.  I think there are over 30 Cardinals in the 1992 team set.

Score need not release too many brands other than flagship and Traded. You can see why with this rather bland 1995 Summitt card.

I always considered Ozzie Smith to be the King of the Infield.  US Playing cards did too back in 1991.

1998 Pinnacle was a funny brand.  At first sight you think it is a nice looking set, but turn the card over and that is where the confusion can set in.

Look closely and you will see the Home Stats notation.  Each card had a Home, Away, and Career stats version.

I wish Topps would bring back Total or come up with a set that featured the entire 24 man roster in one release.  I know they somewhat do that when you include all the team cards from Series 1, Series 2, and Update, but it is not the same.

4 Pack Trade Package

So far I have resisted the urge to open any 2017 Topps cards.  I have made 2 trips to Wal-Mart since the release date, but have avoided the card isle.  I do have the base set coming in from a trade, but it is still hard not grabbing a hanger pack or two.  To help satisfy the card urge, I received a small trade package on Monday from a Bench member.

I sure wish Donruss could use logos.  Even the lack of a small logo on Wainwright's cap stands out like sore thumb.

I would also enjoy a more prominent return of the stolen base in today's game.  It seems more emphasis is placed on the home run than taking the extra base.  I guess growing up in the Cardinals Whitey ball era poisoned my mind.

This was my favorite and least favorite card of the trade package.  Favorite because 2015 Topps Update Chrome cards look very cool in hand.  Least favorite because of the player depicted.  I cannot blame Heyward for wanting to go to a team with a perceived better future, but to say he chose Chicago because he felt it was safer for his familyis like Pujols saying he chose the Angels because the man upstairs told him too.

It's Like Having My Own Cardinals Shop

If you have been following baseball blogs on a daily basis, you know that Daniel from It's like having my own Card Shop has been cranking out the posts since the New Year.  A few weeks ago he wrote this post about cards being included in cereal boxes.  I sent him an extra Jim Edmonds without expecting anything in return.  Daniel was having none of that as he sent a PWE early last week.

I think I bought 1 pizza and 2 boxes of breadsticks last year trying to get the Cardinals from this set.  Not such luck, but now I just need the Molina.

This is my first purple parallel from 2015 Topps.  At first glance I thought it was a chrome card.  The scan does not do it justice.  The top and side borders are a deeper shade of purple than the bottom.  Great looking card of a pitcher I hope has a few good seasons left.
